5 Fun Ways to Escape the Cold in Calgary

Are you starting to get a case of the winter blues?

Winter can seem long and never-ending, especially with our yo-yo weather – just when you think it’s warming up we plunge into another deep freeze! While it’s nice to hibernate indoors with a cup of hot chocolate and binge watch Netflix, winter is a great time to explore some of the great indoor activities that Calgary has to offer!

Prefer saying warm inside to hitting the slopes? Here are some fun indoor activities to help you forget about the cold weather.

Retail Therapy

One of my favourite pass times is heading to the mall for some retail therapy. There is no shortage of malls in the city including the Core (a short walk from Hyatt), Chinook (only 5 stops away from Hyatt by C-Train) and Cross Iron Mills (a 20 minute drive from Hyatt).

Malls have so much more than just clothing stores; they have restaurants, movie theatres, bowling alleys, arcades and more! If you’re on a budget, malls are a great place to people watch and window shop.

Psss love shopping? Then you’ll love our Shop and Stay Package! Get $75 a night to spend at any of the above mentioned malls and a club upgrade including breakfast and evening appetizers.

The Rec Room

The Rec Room, a fairly new addition to Calgary’s entertainment industry, is fun at any age. Get in touch with your inner child with two stories of arcade games, video games, an augmented climbing wall, a racing simulator, virtual reality, ping pong, pool tables, shuffleboard, a full service sit down restaurant & bar plus a poutinerie and custom doughnut bar! (Children are welcome until 10 p.m.; after that, it’s adults-only.)

Escape Rooms

Sticking to the theme of fun and games, there are escape rooms scattered around the city, each unique and one-of-a-kind. Get a group of brilliant minds together to test your skills and see if you can escape a jail cell, mental hospital or a forbidden temple before your time runs out!

Telus Spark

Looking for something more educational? Look no further, the Telus Spark Science Centre is an amazing place to visit. They offer multiple educational and interactive exhibits, multimedia presentations in their dome theatre, adult only nights and a restaurant. Right now they are hosting an amazing travelling exhibit all about whales! See enormous whale skeletons and life size whale models or climb inside a life-size model of a blue whale’s heart!

Day at the Spa

Indulge in a spa day at one of Canada’s 50 Best Spas of 2017 and 2016, Stillwater Spa. Drop by for an express treatment or make a day out of it with one of the Spa’s many services including special packages for couples and moms to be.

Microbreweries

The perfect way to end a day of exploring some of the city’s best indoor activities is to relax and enjoy a nice cold beer and amazing food with some close friends.

Calgary is home to some amazing microbreweries and many of them offer tours. Wild Rose, Trolley 5, Big Rock and Minahs breweries are among the top favourites in the city. Last Best Brewing & Distilling keeps everyone coming back time and time again. Not only do they serve some of the best beer in Calgary, but their food is amazing as well. What more could you ask for?
