It’s nearing that time of year again, when love is in the cold, crisp Calgary air and it’s all about that special someone. Whether you and your main squeeze are foodies, culture vultures, or like to explore a different side to YYC, we’ve searched the city to bring you our best Valentine’s date ideas – guaranteed to set off the sparks this February 14.
Bring out your wild side.
Find your inner animal instincts at Calgary Zoo’s annual adventure into the jungle of critter romance. ‘Heat of the Night’ starts with a romantic Valentine’s dinner for you and your ‘mate’, served in the ENMAX Conservatory, followed by entertaining presentations on the fascinating world of animal courtship! ‘Heat of the Night’ runs on Monday February 13 and Tuesday February 14 only, 6pm-10:30pm. Book early to avoid disappointment. Check out their website.
Be a Chocolatier with your ‘sweet’
Forget the clichéd gifted box of chocolates this year. Instead, treat your other half (and you) to an ‘Everything Chocolate’ Valentine’s workshop at Cuisine et Chateau, Kensington. As the name suggests, you and your love will join Pastry Chef Marnie Fudge for an afternoon of everything chocolate and delicious in this three-hour, hands-on cooking class. Couples will learn to master the art of preparing chocolate mousse, truffles, rich ganache and smooth chocolate sauces. While in the kitchen, you’ll hear about how chocolate is grown, as well as be given the chance to sample delightful chocolates from around the world. Note: comes complete with chocolate cake to take home! What’s not to love? Check out their website.
Play it classic with theatre tickets
Take in a little culture with your special one this Valentine’s with a sophisticated evening downtown. Theatre Calgary are presenting a special feature, ‘Skylight’; a play about two former lovers that find themselves battling over their opposing ideologies and dealing with their overwhelming, strong desire for one another. Described by Theatre Calgary as “one of the greatest intimate plays ever written”, ‘Skylight’ runs from February 14-25, 2017. Tag on a pre-theatre dinner, or after the curtain falls, savour a well-balanced craft cocktail or two at city hotspots, Milk Tiger, or Anejo.
For the science geek in your life
If your Valentine is a Trekkie, then this is the date for you. The February adults only night at TELUS SPARK is entitled ‘Android Love Song’. Beaming down to YYC on February 9, this evening event will be a chance to get one of the first glimpses of the center’s travelling exhibition Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience, as well as explore the scientific future of love! Discover whether androids can trick humans into thinking they’re real, see what may be the ultimate algorithm for love, and understand the way human brains relate to love.
Take it nice and slow with Spa and Brunch
One of our most favourite couples of all-time: spa time followed by brunch in one of the city’s top-rated breakfast spots. Wait for the weekend and plan your perfect spa experience; maybe it’s some much-needed relaxation with a side-by-side couples massage, or an indulgent pamper session. A visit to Stillwater Spa is only steps away from a delicious brunch at Thomson’s buffet (our picks are the eggs benedict and smoked salmon). Alternatively, we love the brunch menu at the nearby Yellow Door Bistro.
Make a date with your skates on Prince’s Island
Sometimes simplicity is best. So bundle up, grab a flask of hot chocolate (spiked if you prefer), throw your skates over your shoulder and head down to Prince’s Island Lagoon with your date. Take in views of the downtown core skyline as you glide on the ice and work up an appetite. The nearby River Café is a cozy option to retreat to afterwards, or head to Stephen Avenue to find some tasty nibbles and bottle of wine to share.
Sip your way around the city together on a tasting tour
This is a day date to remember! Taste the best of Alberta’s craft beer and distillery scene, with this immersive – and fun – tour. Starting from the Calgary Tower, the ‘Spirit of Alberta Tasting Tour’ will take you along the Cowboy Trail, through to Big Rock Brewery, Okotoks and finally, Eau Claire Distillery in Turner Valley. As well as getting lots of sample tasting time, you and your date will learn about Alberta’s booze industry; its history, the impact of the natural make-up of the land on our spirits and brews, and also the lengths brewers and distillers go to in perfecting their Alberta batches. Tours available every Sunday. Check out their website.
