Una’s Pizza brings a slice of sustainability

If you’re anything like myself, then you consider Pizza its own food group. So having recently moved to Calgary, I’ve been on a mission to do as much research about the pizza scene here as I can.

One name that kept coming up from everyone I asked was Una Pizza + Wine, a popular spot on 17th Ave, Calgary’s lively street known for its good food and night life. We decided to try it one night on a whim, knowing that the restaurant does not take reservations. At 7pm on a Friday night, the place was packed, but we were given the option to sit at the bar and seated right away. Despite how busy the place was we found the service to be quick and attentive. Your server is always close by to refill your water or to check and see how you’re doing.

Being a smaller space, it naturally made for a very cozy feel. The art on the walls was a very unique, a mural of a wide range of pop culture icons that I’m sure has sparked many great conversations among guests.

The menu included a wide range of non-pizza items that sounded all too tempting, but we decided to stick to the pies. We opted for a classic margherita pizza, and a prosciutto pizza with provolone and fresh arugula. Neither were disappointing. The restaurant offers chili flakes and chili oil if you like an extra bit of kick to your pizza. Their offerings were thin crust, which is my personal favorite and really allowed me to enjoy all the toppings. While both were amazing and I’d happily recommend either, the prosciutto pizza was my preferred option.

The wine list was diverse and offered something for everyone depending on your preference. Most impressively, the wine list is organized in such a way that they clearly mark which of their wines are sustainable, organic, or biodynamic.

Most items on the menu can be altered to be gluten free if you request, and there are several options for vegans or vegetarians. The restaurant is committed to offering mostly locally sourced ingredients and seek out high quality food that’s not only good for you but that you can feel good about eating. They also do have a separate area for takeout, in case you want to enjoy on the go.

Overall, if you’re looking for great pizza and a cozy spot to have some drinks, go see the folks at Una Pizza + Wine. They are a 5 minute drive away from the hotel, or a short 20 minute walk if you’re feeling up for a stroll on a nice day.
