Situated in the Old Dominion Bank building constructed in 1911, Teatro (Italian for “theatre”) is appropriately located in the historic theatre district of Calgary. This restaurant impresses with its unique exterior and interior decor, which boasts an open-concept kitchen, 16-foot ceilings, and a tasteful, upscale design. The philosophy at Teatro Ristorante is to provide guests with exceptional Italian-infused Mediterranean cuisine and a grand selection of wine while delivering knowledgeable and attentive tableside service.
Though the first steps through the door can be intimidating due to the nature of the fine dining atmosphere, I can assure you that the staff will immediately put you at ease with their friendly, efficient, and professional service. This establishment is definitely on the pricier side, but is an excellent place for special occasions such as birthdays or anniversaries.
After experiencing a tasting menu at Teatro, I can confidently say that the level of service was second to none. Not only was the food exceptional, but the sheer abundance of knowledge from the staff members regarding the food and wine was outstanding. The servers would explain the chef’s concept for each dish and proceed to elaborate on each of the ingredients. This extra level of service provided us with a fun, interactive environment that definitely enhanced our dining experience.
We started off with the Beef Tagliata appetizer consisting of beef carpaccio, arugula, Grana Padano cheese and crispy capers topped with a citrus olive tapenade. Though I typically do not enjoy olives, I must say that the flavours were excellent. Next was the Beet Insalata consisting of salt roasted beets, buffalo mozzarella and micro basil topped with an aged balsamic reduction. It was similar to a caprese salad but with beets instead of tomatoes and it was absolutely delicious.
My favourite dish of the evening, however, was the Mushroom Tagliatelle with wild mushrooms, white wine butter sauce topped with just the right amount of truffle oil. If I could go back and eat just one dish, this would be it! Lastly on the dinner menu was the Farm Roast Chicken served with harvest vegetables and jus. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were extremely tasty as well.
Another nice touch to the dining experience was the restaurant sommelier who paired a different wine for each dish. He explained the grape varietal, the landscape/geography of the region where the grape was grown, tasting notes of the wine, and also provided reasoning for why each wine would pair nicely with the ingredients in dish prepared for us. Teatro possesses an award winning wine cellar, housed in a former bank vault, which includes approximately 800 labels and 10,000 bottles.
And as if that wasn’t enough … we finished off with the Opera Cake for dessert, which was an almond sponge cake with coffee and chocolate ganache. Paired with an amazing port, this dessert was delectable!
If you have never been to Teatro, I suggest that you try it out at least once for the upscale dining experience! I assure you that it is impressive in every aspect and will not disappoint!
