Filling, tasty and sustainable! The Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown was back again this year in Calgary and some of the top chefs in Alberta were here to compete for the title of Ocean Wise Chowder Chowdown Champion – now that’s a mouthful! We had chefs come in from Calgary, Banff and Edmonton to showcase their very own original and unique style of seafood chowder.
There were a lot of booths in the Imperial Ballroom at Hyatt Regency Calgary and the crowd was very excited to see what this year’s chowdown had in store. Our very own Thomsons Restaurant was at booth 7, where Chef Hideyuki Hirooka offered his Miso-Glazed Ocean Wise Salmon and Clam Chowder!
My favourite chowder that evening was the Calgary Zoo’s Smoked West Coast Shellfish, Roasted Taber Corn and Sweet Potato Chowder with Corn Bread Crostini, Kalamata Olive Dust and Chive Oil. This unique chowder had a very unique, creamy taste and it was very filling. I had to go back to the Calgary Zoo’s booth and grab a second helping!
Chef James Neilson and his team created this chowder with inspiration from Vancouver and Victoria’s coast, where Neilson had gained a lot of experiences and passion to create his very own style of chowder.
All in all, this year’s chowdown was a great success! I cannot wait until the next Chowder Chowdown in 2016. Bon appetit!
