Countdown to Spring 2015

Daylight-Savings Time is such an inspiring sign that spring is coming. Beginning around the end of March is “Hanami,” which literally translates to flower viewing, an annual Japanese custom of enjoying blooming cherry blossoms called “Sakura”

Japanese cherry blossoms, “Sakura”

Last Friday, I was in the mood for Japanese Cuisine and so decided to head to Sushi Hiro with a friend. A decade old, the traditional restaurant is family owned and operate by Mr. Hiro and his wife. It is located in downtown Calgary, but just far enough to escape city noise.

When I initially moved from Toronto to Calgary, I began searching for an authentic Japanese restaurant. I was happy when I finally found Sushi Hiro and had a true Japanese experience.

My Favourite Calgary Restaurant For Authentic Japanese – Sushi HIro

During my recent visit, Mrs. Hiro came out to meet and welcomed my friend and I as usual – she is a warm and welcoming woman. Promptly following our greeting, we were guided to a tatami-mat room where I would dine. There are also Western-style tables and chairs available, but the novelty of tatami rooms adds to the fun! It is customary to take off your shoes as you step upon a tatami floor – we observed the custom and then sat down for a good meal.

My friend ordered cold soba with tempura, grilled whole squid and green tea ice cream with red bean sauce. When it was my turn to order, I chose a three-course meal: miso soup, crab salad and assorted sashimi as an appetizer, followed by chicken and salmon teriyaki for my main course, and a selection of seasonal fruit for dessert. We greatly enjoyed all of the food and the ambiance during our visit.

Mr. Hiro and His Son Making Delicious Dishes

Mr. Hiro’s delicious food is not the only reason why I’m a loyal regular of the sushi restaurant, but also the small details attended to by Mrs. Hiro. Even though my friend and I visited on a busy Friday night, she still inquired if we preferred to delay our main courses so that we could chat.

Nowadays, it is rare to find Japanese restaurants that maintain the distinct character of Japanese culture. Sushi Hiro is the exception and therefore a must-try for Japanese food-lovers.

Sushi Hiro is open during the following hours:

Monday 11:30 am – 10:00 pm
Tuesday 11:30 am – 10:00 pm

Friday 11:30 am – 10:00 pm
Saturday 11:30 am – 10:00 pm
Sunday Closed
