Family Friendly Must-Do’s at the Calgary Stampede

Ya –Hoo, I wanted to share a bit of The Greatest Outdoor show with you all. The Calgary Stampede goes on for ten action packed days. There’s an array of events to take in from the Grand Stand to the Big 4 Super Dog show.  Let me share with you all a few more family friendly “must” dos and eats!

Matthew Stampede Information

The Rodeo

The caliber of a rodeo comes down to two things: the skill of the competitors and the quality of the horses, bulls and steers. The Calgary Stampede Rodeo features the world’s best rodeo athletes and the finest stock. Every afternoon at 1:15pm competitors face off in a furious, action-packed display of skill and grit. Daily prizes build toward Wildcard Saturday and Showdown Sunday – “Rodeo’s Richest Afternoon.” You’ve never experienced anything like it!

Bell Aqua Ranch

One of the new features of this year’s midway will be the new Bell aqua ranch. Featuring fountains shooting water 70 feet high in the sky and extreme jet skiers making waves, all in the middle of Stampede Park!  Show times are at 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily.

Every night at approximately 11 p.m. the Bell aqua ranch will play host to Out of the Blue. This captivating water display, complete with mesmerizing lighting and special effects, will be synched to the finale of the spectacular TransAlta Grandstand Show fireworks.

Rides

The wildest rides this side of the Rodeo awaits you at the Stampede Midway. There’s enough white-knuckled exhilaration to satisfy any adrenaline aficionado. If you prefer skills to thrills, your favorite games are set to challenge your hand-eye coordination and bestow bragging rights. For me personally The Sling Shot is the Ride to do if you are up for leaving your stomach on the ground as you are literally shot into the air attached to bungee cords.

Food Trucks

Also new this year, 18 amazing food trucks will be on Stampede Park for the inaugural Calgary Stampede Food Truck Rally July 11-13. On each of these three nights, six unique food trucks will roll into the Agriculture Zone from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. offering people a taste test from these mobile favorites. For myself you can’t go wrong with anything at a fair and a couple of my must eats are Deep Fried Avocado that has been battered in a tempura batter. Another must eat is Chocolate Dipped Jalapeno, Just as it sounds. A jalapeno is dipped into chocolate to make for a sweet and spicy treat.

YUM - a must eat when heading to the grounds!

TransAlta Grandstand Show

Like any good things they must come to an end, and I couldn’t think of a better way to wind up an action food filled day then to take in the Grand Stand show. The show will focus on five genres of music – each performed by one many guest performers along with the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede who spend more than 400 hours rehearsing for the show. Stunning special effects will include a flying baby grand piano and fabulous fireworks.

Have a happy Stampede weekend if you’re in town and if not we look forward to seeing you at The Hyatt Regency next year to help celebrate the 102 year! Ya- Hoo
