FAB Things to Do: Patio Season in Calgary

Patio season has officially arrived and Catch & the Oyster Bar owns the best seat on Stephen Ave for sunshine and people watching. They also have a killer Happy Hour menu that includes $5 pints, select cocktails and appetizers.

Come on down, enjoy the sun maybe even some succulent oysters!

The city is is buzzing thanks to the beautiful weather. Bright bold colours have finally taken over the depressing black and grey suits. Here are a few of my picks for May:

  1. Cirque Du Soleil has been in town for the past month and is finishing up their time in Calgary with a few more shows this weekend. Amaluna is performed daily until May 12th and I highly recommend it for everyone! The show is exhilarating and full of energy which is simply amazing.
  2. Stage West is now performing the ever popular musical Chicago. Chicago is the longest running broadway show, based on a murder in the 1920’s, this story is sure to have you snapping your fingers and tapping your toes.
  3. The King of Pop shuffles across the floor of the Jubilee, showcasing the Jackson 5 era to current.  This legend is in most of our daily routines over and over.
Enjoy the sunshine and I look forward to chatting with you soon.

Hot, Hot, Stuff: What Women Want

Is work hectic for you right now? I think it’s time to rejuvenate. Day-in and day-out our schedules become so full that we sometimes feel a bit stretched. That being said, I have the perfect therapy for you.

The hotel recently launched a new program called ‘Hyatt Has It’ which tailors the hotel experience for guests, specifically women. Globally, Hyatt conducted a large scale listening exercise to better understand what is most important to women travelers. ‘Hyatt Has It’ provides frequently forgotten items, a healthy balanced menu, and a new dermatological bath line, KenetMD. A component of the new program focuses on rejuvenating through yoga. The hotel offers in-room yoga mats and TV yoga sessions (for free). At our property, we’re pleased to partner with The Hot Yoga Lounge (a short walk from the hotel) to provide rejuvenating hot yoga classes at a discounted price to our guests.

If you have never done yoga I fully recommend that you check it out. It completely cleanses your body, giving you a FAB work-out at the same time.

Don't forget to bring a towel and water, you're going to be dripping 5min into your first sun salutation.

The moment you walk into the studio your shoulders drop, and the stress seems to melt away (might be due to the temperature of the room). The staff is wonderfully inviting and makes sure you’re as comfortable as you can be in a new setting. Our instructor Lana, who has one of the calmest spirits I’ve had the pleasure of being around, gently guides the class through a demanding session of standing and seated postures. Each posture assisted in opening my rigid hips.

After exiting the class it’s like the sky opened up and the sun was shining, the birds were chirping and a lovely song was playing as I skipped back to my car! What a feeling! I can see how people become addicted to hot yoga, it’s like a magical happy drug – and you need to try it.

FAB Things to Do: 3 Winter Wonderland Adventures

This month is busy with events and social gatherings. The Metropolitan Grill has re-opened and looks FAB! The interior has been completely remodeled and designed to be extremely urban. I love this spot after work with some friends for a cocktail and tasty bites.

The Metropolitan Grill
The crowd heavily consists of Calgary’s young business guys and gals. The music is a nice mix of Top 40 and oldies. The service is outstanding and they offer an array of wine varietals and yummy cocktails. I highly recommend this hot spot as being Calgary’s urban venue.

We’ve had a pile of fresh snow over the past few days which means the mountains are ready and waiting with perfect winter conditions. If you don’t have plans for the weekend I suggest packing up the car and heading to the mountains.

Here are some winter wonderland activities I recommend in Banff:

1. Skating – spend the day skating on the pond by the Waldhaus Pub in Banff. (Skate rentals are available from Kippers downtown).

This outdoor rink, behind the Fairmont, has a heated shelter and crackling fire for staying warm.

2. Tubing – Fly down a mountain on a tire tube at Mt. Norquay. They have a tow rope that takes you up the mountain for exhilarating rides down!
Tubing is a great activity to do with your family or friends.

3. Dining - After a day of fun in the Rockies your stomach is sure to be crying for a hearty meal. Hit up the Maple Leaf Grill for a seared steak cooked to perfection. I’ve been here several times and honestly have never had a better steak experience.

Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate to start your meal.

FAB Things to Do: I Ain’t Afraid of No Ghosts…

Nestled in the quaint district of Inglewood sits a gorgeous Victorian home. The Deane House, banked on the Elbow River is definitely a local hot spot.

Dean House, located 750 9 Avenue Southeast, Calgary

Brunch anyone? I can easily rank this restaurant as one of my top 5 favorite places for breakfast in Calgary. Close enough to see the skyline of downtown in the near west and yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle. I had the pleasure of enjoying a very delicious brunch while taking in the historical character and our servers educational intro. I highly recommend, not that I’ve tried both of these in the same sitting, the Eggs Benedict, French Toast, and of course their super FAB coffee! The space is well set for large parties and absolutely delightful for tables of two. Make sure you put this on your “Must Do” list becuase you are missing out!

Are you looking to take in some live Theatre? Well do I have a show for you!

Ghost Busted, showing nightly at Jubilations Dinner Theatre

I had the opportunity to see Ghost Busted with a few colleagues. Live from the Dorchester Hotel this music packed evening was a hoot. The characters stay in character throughout the whole evening, from serving our meals to the themed music playing in the back ground.  This is another fantastic idea for team building, work Christmas parties or going out with a great group of friends. I found this show particularly neat as it’s themed around a Hotel – and well all of us whom attended are Hoteliers. I highly recommend this show for everyone to see. Ghost Busted is showing nightly at Jubilations Dinner Theatre through February 9th, 2013.

The city is glistening with Christmas bliss, full of sparkling colors and a fair to show. If you are looking for some great Christmas gift ideas, or just simply in the spirit check out some local Christmas Fairs.

Stephen Ave decorated for Christmas!

I took in the sites at the Spruce Meadows Fair last weekend with my family and it was a fantastic time. Sprawled throughout the entire grounds are tents full of FAB booths. In the main center of the grounds there’s a large building which displays an array of countries and there signature theme. There was live music and FAB homemade gifts from all over the world. Indeed I did some Christmas shopping  and purchased a few paintings for myself. Unfortunately the Spruce Meadows show is over until next year but click here to find upcoming Christmas Fairs.

Well my Blog Readers that’s all my Fab things this week, and I will be attending some more great things this up and coming week.

FAB Things to Do: 130km and 14 turns in 60 seconds!

Hello everyone. I had an exhilarating time this past week. Are you ready to have your socks blown off? I have the FAB new adventure to add to your list of things to do in Calgary. Last weekend I took my team bobsledding at the Canada Olympic Park. This adventure was jaw dropping at 130kms and 14 turns in 60 seconds!

The start line – looking out to a black-hole of nothing!

The adrenaline rush kicked in as soon as we were standing at the start line looking across at the ice curving straight down, to what looked like a black-hole with no end.

We went through a very quick but thorough instruction course and then were fit with helmets.

The most exciting thing was the G-force; you couldn’t even keep your head up straight while flying around the bends. I felt like a bobble-head doll.

Calgary bobsledding track!

I highly recommend this activity, this isn’t only perfect for a group of friends by a fun date idea too.

Signature piece from local fashion designer, Leah Van Loon.

I recently attended the Ooh Lala Fashion show at 80th and Ivy. This was a Great evening of new fashion and networking.  If you’re not familiar with 80th and Ivy, it’s a FAB new restaurant located in the bustling 17th Avenue district.

Beautiful duck dish served by 80th & Ivy!

With an open concept interior this is such an inviting place with a very impressive menu. The bar looking over the open kitchen is very warm, and fantastic for those larger parties. This urban venue is touched with sophistication, but yet has that cozy local feeling. Make sure you place your reservations in early, as you don’t want to miss out on this FAB dinning experience.

Stay tuned for next weeks Finds!!

FAB Things To Do: Canadian Vacation

Well hello everyone!!

I’m back, relaxed and looking forward to many exciting and FAB Events taking place this month.

As promised, I want to share a bit of my vacation with all of you. My vacation started with a dose of relaxation as I was pampered at Stillwater Spa. For an hour and a half I was captured in an intense treatment specially designed for dry, devitalized skin. The Enrich Body Treatment started with a gentle exfoliation, followed by a Moor Mud application and warm wrap. While my body soaked up the moisture and warmth of the wrap, my face and scalp were treated to a gentle massage. The treatment ended with a full body butter application. I walked (or should I say rolled) out of the spa feeling like a new replenished man! It was almost like a snake shedding skin. This has to be the best possible way to start a vacation – completely and utterly relaxed. From the moment I checked into the spa I felt as if I were a Prince being pampered for the evening ball.

Stillwater Spa also has this FAB new booking program to ensure even the busiest person is able to find treatment availability that fits their tight schedule. Please watch for daily posts through Facebook for next day spa openings. Seize the Day with an exhilarating spa experience! Like Stillwater Spa on Facebook

Now lets get to my vacation. For all of you who haven’t been to Eastern Canada it’s a must. Many of the places were hidden little gems that you wouldn’t find on your own. I flew to Ottawa with my Family and ventured through Quebec.

The colors were magical. I had never been East in the  Fall, so it was amazing to see our nations capital covered in rich reds, yellows and oranges.

Upon arrival we were whisked away to my sister and Dan’s beautiful home in Gatineau, Quebec. This is where the “Zen Time” began. We arrived to a rainy 13 degree Fall afternoon.  Something was cooking as the house was coated in smells of amazing flavors.

Well yes it’s Fall, and Thanksgiving would not be complete without having duck. WOW….. this dinner was so FAB I had 2 plates finished off in no time. I felt right at home with the family laughing and connecting in such an array of love. After dinner Mareta and Dan asked me to go to a friends wedding with them. The reception was held in a beautiful old cathedral. What fun – it was FAB. I blended right in on the dance floor where I met such wonderful individuals. One moment comes to mind of dancing away with my new found friend, Alex. We chuckled, flipped, spun and then started all over again – so much fun. The bride and groom looked so happy together surrounded by their loved ones. As our evening came to an end we exchanged cards and said our goodbyes.

“Wakey,  wakey eggs and bakey” was the morning theme. We cruised the Warehouse District of Ottawa to come upon this amazing bistro called Art-Is-In. Here we discovered my new favorite breakfast sandwich; it sure helps to have the locals opinion on best restaurants when visiting new places, thanks Mareta and Dan. Art-Is-In was packed with people sipping cappuccinos and visiting with family and friends. At the back of the bistro you could see gourmet bread loafs being baked and placed on shelves for sale, “Oh my, I’ll take 3!”. The owner  came over to greet us and started telling us about his impressive background as the former Prime Minister, Paul Martins personal Chef. You can say that we were in good hands. We exchanged cards and with many compliments from my family said farewell.

We were off once again, heading South to the cottage for another Thanksgiving dinner with Dan’s family. There’s something about country roads that evokes a sense of calming in me, perhaps it’s from growing up on a farm. There’s nothing like a country cruise were everywhere you look is something new and gorgeous.

Dan’s family cabin. YYC Concierge travels in Canada

The next two days with Dan’s family were filled with crackling fires, board games and lots of laughter. While sitting on the porch one evening I heard a Loon, this was such an incredible moment as I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing one before. Dan’s family cottage was truly one of the best places to soak up RNR time.

After this wonderful time we headed south to Kingston and toured the beauty of Canada’s First Nations Capital. The history, from city hall to old architecture, was jaw dropping.

We took a tour of  Fort Henry and then headed to Thousand Islands. This particular area of the Country was just amazing.

Enjoying a glass of wine at Norman Hardy Winery. YYC Concierge travels in Canada.

We then made our way to wine country in Prince Edward County where we visited a number of FAB wineries.

Harvest at the Apple Orchards. YYC Concierge travels in Canada.

Apple Orchids were in full harvest mode. You can smell the sweet apples as soon as you open the car door.

As I’m sure you can see from all my photos my vacation through Eastern Canada was tranquil. I can easily go on and on about this trip. It was one heck of a FAB experience and all the more memorable to have shared with my beautiful family!

This weekend I am taking my Concierge team Bobsledding and then attending a Fashion Show at 80th and IVY.

See you all next week.

FAB Things to Do: Relaxing in and outside of the city

It’s complete and open for business. The new re-designed, award-winning, Stillwater Spa has made extensive changes to modernize their appeal.
From the moment you walk in your surrounded with a feeling of ease and Zen.

The state-of-art rooms and upgrades are unique to this downtown Calgary spa. There’s something to say about the Hyatt Regency Calgary on its consistent upgrades. This renovation is one that you must experience to truly appreciate and Stillwater’s Spa Concierge will be more then happy to help you make arrangements.

There is lots going on in the city of Calgary right now. This coming weekend is the Terry Fox Run.

This is a fantastic day to participate in a fun run with your family, friends or even by yourself. Calgary is hosting in two locations, Eau Claire and McKenzie Towne. This is a great cause and one in which I participate in through raising funds and walking. I would like to take a brief moment to thank all of you who made donations!

I was recently on a little road trip and to Bragg Creek. It only takes 30 minutes and is very easy to find, just head west on Hwy 8 and follow the signs.

The little town is nestled in the Foothills and lined with lushes evergreens. Bragg Creek looks like an old outpost so all the stores look like saloons, complete with rails out front to tie up a horse. There’s a FAB pizzeria that makes all the their pizzas fresh in-house. If you want to make a weekend of it there’s a couple chalets behind the Steak Pit Restaurant.

The gorgeous Elbow Falls are a short 20 minute drive from Bragg Creek.

I highly recommend this trip as it is a FAB day away from the bustling city!

There are some new restaurants that have opened in the district of Mission and I can’t wait to check them out and fill you all in on my tasty picks!

Look forward to writing you all next week!!

FAB Things to Do: Labour Day Weeknd & Pride Calgary

Another week has flown by and we’re that much closer to fall – BOOOO! Summer don’t go away. I’ve been busy gearing up for a busy September, from attending the Masters at Spruce Meadows to fundraising for the Terry Fox Run with my Les Clefs d’Or group.

Last  weekend I enjoyed spending time by the Bow River soaking up some sun. If you haven’t made a trip to the river this summer I suggest you add it to the list. Parks, refreshing rivers and pathways are one of the perfect ways to spend a warm afternoon with family and friends.
The water is quite warm and great sites to check out along the way such as Eau Claire, Fort Calgary, Zoo, Bird Sanctuary, Ed worthy Park, including the Fab new Olympic Rapid Course. The is a full day or half day , which ever you prefer. If you have no plans this Labor Day long weekend I recommend you plan a float.

I can’t believe I am about to Blog about September. Like really? Football is quickly approaching , and harvest is right around the corner. Summer is leaving us, but we’re rolling into another season of crisp fall colors.
This weekend rainbows will fly high in the sky glittering the streets of Stephen Ave. Calgary Pride starts today and runs through the long weekend. The official pride will fill Stephen Ave Sunday morning with beer gardens and other festivities taking place in Olympic Plaza.
The Pride weekend schedule is so packed that it’s just easier for me to direct you to the website. Check out the schedule and encourage you to stop by to show your Pride! http://www.pridecalgary.ca/
The staff at the hotel has anxiously been awaiting today, as we raised the Pride flags high above the hotel and set another 2 up on Stephen Avenue.

Hyatt Regency Calgary proudly displaying the Pride Flag

The bartenders at Sandstone lounge have been diligently working on a feature cocktail for the weekend. “Pride in a Pitcher”, our signature White Sangria will be served on the patio all weekend for only $20.

Pride in a Pitcher – White Sangria at Sandstone Lounge

I’ll have a re-cap of the weekends events coming shortly, but for now I’m off to celebrate with Calgary! Have a FAB weekend everyone.

FAB Things to Do: Summer in the City

Hello to all my FAB People, I’m back. I hope everyone is having a fantastic summer and enjoying the heat. Well what can I say, it’s been a FAB summer in the city of Calgary and I have a lot to share with you.

Stampede Midway

To get you up to speed lets start with the infamous Calgary Stampede. WOW….salute to everyone in the city for pulling together to make is year so special. What a way to display the world’s best in show. The Calgary Stampede is always quite the spectacle but this year in particular was exceptionally special as we celebrated the centennial. Every aspect of the traditional 10 days was taken to the next level, truly highlighting Calgary’s western way.

I had the pleasure of speaking with a guest visiting from Oklahoma who mentioned their thrill of traveling the world to see as many shows and local festivals as possible. Their excitement was bubbling as they explained that they’ve never experienced anything like this before and the Calgary Stampede is officially the best show they’ve ever been to. What a moment, I was overcome with pride, honour and love for my home city. Calgary is not just a dot on the map anymore, it is a destination filled with new energy that celebrates its culture infused with worldly inspiration on a daily basis.

Being a hotelier and having the opportunity to experience all emotions of the Stampede, including long days and long hours, I can honestly say this was the best one ever. It reminded me of the 2010 Winter Olympics when I worked in Vancouver. The energy is so powerful, and filled with so much happiness, it’s FAB-U-LOUS!

For those of you inspired to travel from abroad, the annual Calgary Stampede takes place in the first week of July. Come on over and take apart of this world class experience in 2013.

Alright, enough of the past! We have an abundance of other things going on in our city. Currently Shakespeare in the Park is performing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” in the beautiful Princes Island Park. In partnership with Theatre Calgary, Shakespeare in the Park is celebrating its 25th season with a FAB cast and crew, including students from Mount Royal and Theatre Calgary professionals. I highly recommend this for a date! Just bring a couple blankets, snacks and a beverage – easy! Details

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Image borrowed from Theatre Calgary

The Fringe Festival kicks off this weekend and runs through August 11th in Inglewood, this event is full of fun and perfect for families. Details

Last but not least “Legally Blonde” the musical is showing in Olympic Plaza until Saturday, August 4th. The show starts at 6:30pm and is performed by Summerstock, the only live outdoor musical theatre company in Calgary. Take the other half, your friends or family and enjoy some of Calgary’s finest theatrical talent. Details

With so many things happening this long weekend, you should have no problem finding many ways to fill the time.

I’m excited to be hosting my Les Clefs d’Or meeting this coming Tuesday with all my fellow members. Stay tuned to my next FAB Dining post!
